MINI COOPER BUYING GUIDE
The Cooper trim level is MINI’s hottest, available across its scope. Here’s all you need to know to help you choose your own.
The MINI Cooper is a name steeped in history, related to Monte Carlo Rally successes and generations of performance spin-offs.
These days, the name can be found across the MINI range, and it means as much as ever in terms of performance and driver enjoyment.
Here’s our buyers guide to each of the MINI Cooper versions.
MINI Cooper 3-door
The first and still the most fun, the 3-dr Cooper recalls the timeless Cooper models of old, with streamlined, cheeky styling and proceed kart-like handling.
If practicality is not the most important factor for you, there is no additional small car that’s quite as much fun. The entry-level Cooper includes a three-cylinder 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, while the S has a 2.0-litre four-pot. The S is stronger (189bhp vs 134bhp) however, the normal Cooper is still an absolute pleasure to drive, using a characterful engine note.
The diesel isn’t as quick, but is extremely frugal, offering around 75mpg.
There’s also the range-topping John Cooper Works edition, including track features and distinctive performance styling add-ons. It’s a fantastic machine and it truly looks the part.
MINI Cooper 5-door
The Cooper 5-door hatch uses a lengthened version of this 3-dr platform, using an extra pair of doors and quite a fair amount of rear legroom.
The boot is 30 per cent larger than that of those three-door, while the trimming levels are otherwise exactly the same. It’s a more sensible alternative to the classic 3-door model, but still keeps a lot of its understated charm and personality.
MINI Cooper Countryman
With its elevated ride height, four-wheel-drive and chunky styling, the Cooper Countryman is the vehicle you need for the most intense of MINI adventures.
Yet despite its own crossover credentials, the Countryman keeps a degree of driving enjoyment that few other small SUVs may muster, due to MINI’s superb chassis technologies. It is still an absolute delight to drive, with a choice of three models — the standard Cooper and the more powerful Cooper S, that utilize the very same engines as the Mini hatch. Or for the full effect, there is a John Cooper Works variant, which includes added styling attributes and special alloys.
MINI Cooper Convertible
The ragtop MINI is a fun-filled alternate into the 3-door, which functions best in three-cylinder form, much like the roof down you get to really appreciate its characterful engine notice.
MINI Cooper Clubman
The Clubman is the perfect MINI if you require a bit more extra space, above and beyond the five-door hatch but with a more car-like appearance compared to crossover Countryman.
