MINI COOPER BUYING GUIDE
The Cooper trim level is MINI’s most popular, accessible across its range. Here’s all you need to know to help you choose your own.
The MINI Cooper is a name steeped in history, associated with Monte Carlo Rally victories and generations of performance spin-offs.
These days, the name can be found round the MINI range, and it means as much as ever in terms of functionality and driver enjoyment.
Here’s our buyers guide to each of the MINI Cooper models.
MINI Cooper 3-door
The first and still the most fun, the 3-dr Cooper recalls the classic Cooper versions of older, with streamlined, cheeky styling and go kart-like handling.
If practicality is not the most crucial element for you, there is no additional small car that’s quite as much pleasure.
The three-door MINI comes in three flavours. The entry-level Cooper has a three-cylinder 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, while the S has a 2.0-litre four-pot. The S is stronger (189bhp vs 134bhp) but the normal Cooper is still an absolute pleasure to drive, using a characterful engine notice.
The petrol isn’t as quick, but is very frugal, offering around 75mpg.
There’s also the range-topping John Cooper Works edition, including monitor features and distinctive performance styling add-ons. It is a fantastic machine and it really looks the part.
MINI Cooper 5-door
The Cooper 5-door hatch utilizes a lengthened version of this 3-dr platform, with an additional pair of doors and quite a decent number of rear legroom.
The boot is 30 percent larger than that of those three-door, while the trimming levels are otherwise the same. It is a more sensible alternative to the classic 3-door version, but still retains a whole lot of its cheeky charm and character.
MINI Cooper Countryman
With its raised ride height, four-wheel-drive and chunky styling, the Cooper Countryman is your car you need for the most extreme of MINI adventures.
Nevertheless despite its crossover credentials, the Countryman retains a degree of driving pleasure that few other small SUVs can muster, due to MINI’s superb chassis engineering. It’s still a complete delight to drive, using a choice of 3 versions — the standard Cooper and the more powerful Cooper S, which utilize the same engines as the Mini hatch. Or for the entire effect, there’s a John Cooper Works variant, which comes with added styling features and special alloys.
MINI Cooper Convertible
The ragtop MINI is a fun-filled alternate into the 3-door, which functions best in three-cylinder type, much like the roof down you get to actually enjoy its characterful engine note.
It’s also available as a Cooper S with the stronger 2.0-litre engine, or as a John Cooper Works unique, with additional performance and styling attributes.
MINI Cooper Clubman
The Clubman is the ideal MINI should you need a bit more extra space, above and outside the five-door hatch but with a more car-like appearance than the crossover Countryman.
