WILLIAMSBURG — Jimmy Durham’s North Laurel 11-12 year-old All-Stars reeled off three straight wins after falling to the losers’ bracket of the District 4 Tournament, but couldn’t advance any further after losing to Hazard/Perry for the second time during tournament play, 10-3.
North Laurel was able to take a 2-0 lead, but couldn’t hold on as Hazard/Perry answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding four more runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control of the contest at 8-2.
North Laurel was able to cut its deficit to 8-3 in the top of the fourth inning before seeing Hazard/Perry add two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win. Hazard/Perry pitcher Kate grimsby limited North Laurel to four hits in the game while striking out seven batters.
Makayla Mastin scored twice for North Laurel while Marlie McDaniel managed to cross home plate one time. Mastin also added a hit along with Lyla Durham, Kylee Brock and Madison Deaton.
North Laurel 14, Tri-Cities 0
North Laurel continued its winning ways, as Marlie McDaniel led the way with a 3-for-3 effort while scoring four times. Makayla Mastin picked up the win in the pitcher’s circle, limiting Tri-Cities to only one base runner in the 14-0 win.
North Laurel struck first with two runs in the first inning before adding three more runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Jimmy Durham’s squad added two more runs in the third inning before putting the finishing touches not he win with a seven-run fourth inning.
North Laurel 14, Jackson County 1
North Laurel pounded out 18 hits during its 14-1 win over Jackson County.
Jimmy Durham’s squad used a four-run first inning to take control of the game before adding seven more runs in the second inning. North Laurel wrapped-up its scoring by adding three more runs in the third inning.
North Laurel had three players collect three hits in the win in Maria Young (three hits, three runs scored), Halle Norvell (three hits, three runs scored), and Marlie McDaniel (three hits, two runs scored). Norvell notched the win in the pitcher’s circle, tossing a no-hitter while striking out six batters.
North Laurel 14, Knox County 0
A seven-run second inning allowed North Laurel to pull away from Knox County and roll to an easy 14-0 victory.
North Laurel built a 4-0 lead in the first inning before scoring seven runs in the second inning to take an 11-0 edge. North Laurel added three more runs in the third inning to wrap-up the win.
Makayla Mastin struck out five batters, and surrendered only one hit in the win while also going 1-for-2 with one run scored at the plate. Marie McDaniel finished with two hits, and two runs scored while Madison Deaton led North Laurel with three runs scored. Maria Young, Kylee Brock, and Tosha Combs each scored twice in the win
