Meet The 167mph Electric Cupra E Racer That’s Faster Than A Supercar With The Power Of 9,000 Smartphones

THIS is the world's first electric touring car - and it'll frighten most supercars.

The Cupra e-Racer is capable of 167mph powered by batteries equal to 9,000 smartphones.

It'll knock 0-62mph off in just 3.2 seconds and reach 0-124mph in 8.2 seconds leaving most V8 motors in its wake.

The staggering performance comes from an electric motor which develops the equivalent of around 670bhp.

The battery is made up of 6,072 cells and weighs 450kg - around one third of the overall car's weight - with a full charge taking around 40 minutes.

Bright sparks at SEAT's new performance arm have created the electric boy racer in the hope it'll spawn a new race series - just like Formula E.

It's based on the Cupra petrol touring car but because it doesn't use an internal combustion engine there are zero emissions.

To improve aerodynamics, designers replaced wing mirrors with cameras which broadcast everything onto a large screen on the dashboard.

Dr Matthias Rabe, executive vice-president for research and development, said: "The Cupra e-Racer is a true motorsport car.

"The Cupra e-Racer's intention is to exceed the performance of the conventional version, to demonstrate Cupra's technological capabilities at all levels.

"We are committed to the E TCR because we are convinced that the future of competition is in electric engines.

"Just as the SEAT Leon Cup Racer laid the technical foundations of the TCR championship, once again we are blazing trails in this new experience."

Sales of alternatively-fuelled vehicles (AFV) such as electric cars are on the rise as infrastructure and range improves.

Chargemaster estimates by 2020, there could be around 70,000 charging points both on the road and at destinations, with that number expected to rise to over 500,000 by 2030.

Figures released earlier this month by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showed that in the first two months of 2018, there were 12,567 AFV registered in the UK.
