A man was still being quizzed today in connection with the violent deaths of two young women who were found dead at an exclusive city-centre apartment.

The victims, in their early twenties, were discovered by a concierge who forced his way into the Birmingham flat after worried relatives failed to make contact with the pair. Police today removed their bodies from the blood-drenched scene.

The killer used one or more weapons on the victims - both in their twenties.

A 28-year-old man from the city, who is understood to be known to the women but not related, was arrested early yesterday morning following an all-ports alert as he attempted to board a ferry in Dover, Kent, 12 hours after the bodies were discovered.

Today officers continued to question him.

Residents of Birmingham's Jupiter Apartments complex yesterday claimed the women had been working as prostitutes and possibly came from Iran.

Police, however, refused to comment on their nationality and said they were unaware of any vice link 'at this stage'.

Officers revealed the women - believed to have been killed at the weekend - had been so severely attacked they were relying on post-mortem examinations to establish how they were killed.

Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Mirfield, head of West Midland Police's major investigation unit, said: 'It was a chaotic and sustained attack.

'There was a substantial amount of blood inside many of the rooms.'

The bodies remained in the £200,000 fourth-floor flat yesterday while forensics officers worked inside.

CCTV footage from the complex was also being studied.

Brutal: Police said the women were probably attacked with several different weapons before their killer fled

Police were yesterday trying to establish a motive for the killings. Officers said the women had not been tied up and there was no sign of a forced entry.

The women were unrelated and lived together at the £1,000-a-month property central Birmingham block - where former Big Brother winner and DJ Kate Lawler also owns a flat.

Residents at the four-building complex, not far from the city's busy Broad Street entertainment district, said prostitution was rife in the area.

One woman, who asked not to be named, said: 'I spoke to a friend of mine who lives on their landing and he told me the girls were apparently Iranian prostitutes.'

Resident Natalie Skett, 25, said she heard a woman in the vicinity of the flat making loud noises over the weekend. She added: 'I thought she was just having a good time but me and my friend began to think she could be a prostitute.'

Mark Gordon, 29, who lives nearby, said: 'It's well known that a few of the apartments are bought up by pimps who use them as brothels.'

Detective Chief Superintendent Mirfield said he believed the women were killed 'sometime over the weekend' but that he had no evidence that they were prostitutes.

He said there appeared to be 'signs of ransacking' in the fourth-floor apartment.

Post-mortem examinations were expected to be completed today.
